Digital Devices for Student Learning

Thank you for choosing to study at Borders College. The new academic term is just around the corner and I am sure that you are beginning to get excited about the prospect of commencing or continuing your studies at the College.

The course that you have applied for uses a considerable amount of online learning resources. This means that you are required to have access to your own device in class each day.

Why do I need my own device?

You will have access through your own device to the college’s online learning platforms such as Moodle. The platforms contain vital information about your course and allow you to communicate with lecturers and other learners. You can access these platforms when outside the College so you can easily catch-up or revise materials covered in class. You will be able to access interactive materials, stream videos and podcasts, and other resources such as:

  • Course information
  • Course handbooks
  • Lecture notes and handouts
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Tests and quizzes
  • Virtual classrooms
  • Online resources
  • Blogs & Wikis
  • Email (key mode of communication when at College)
  • Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Online storage using OneDrive
Once enrolled at College you will have access to a Microsoft Office 365 account. Not only does this give you access to your College email account but it also provides you with 1TB of cloud storage and access to the full suite of Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the duration of your course.

Your induction to College will include information on using your device, connection to the wireless network, access to and use of College resources and systems. We will also introduce you to IT support services.

What do I do if I don’t have a device on the first day?

Don’t worry. Using your student card, you can borrow a loan Laptop on a daily basis from our laptop lockers, but you will not be able to remove this device from campus.

What if I do not have access to a device?

The onus is on you to bring a device to College for your studies. We do appreciate that in certain circumstances students may have not access to a device.

What type of device do I need?

We recommend the following specification as a minimum:

  • Operating System: Windows 10
  • Processor: minimum 2Ghz
  • Memory: Minimum 4GB
  • Storage: Minimum: 128GB (free OneDrive cloud storage is available to all students)
  • Display: Minimum: 11” screen (1366 x 768)
  • Wireless: Networking – 802.11n/ac
  • Connectivity: USB/Bluetooth
  • Additional: Camera/Microphone
  • Battery Life: 5+ hours

Android/Chrome/Apple iOS devices are not compatible devices for certain aspects of our programmes.

If you decide to purchase a new device it is not necessary for you to purchase an expensive, high-end one. A minimum device specification is set out above and suitable devices can be purchased for approximately £200 from online retailers, major high street retailers or local computing retailers.
