Make-up masterclass lays ‘foundation’ for beauty students

Borders College recently welcomed former Beauty Therapy student Emma Needham into the Salon for a special make-up masterclass, delivered to Level 2 Beauty Therapy students in the training salon at Galashiels.

Emma gained her Level 3 NVQ in Beauty Therapy from Borders College in 2019. She went on to further her career with make-up artist Danni Burnside, who spotted her potential while also giving a make-up masterclass presentation to students back in 2017.

While working with Danni, Emma did a number of wedding make-up sessions, before going on to set up her own beauty therapy business.

Sharing her expertise with the class, Emma carried out a special occasion make-up demonstration, which the students then recreated on each other in a skills workshop session. This gave them the chance to view techniques and products used to create various looks, as well as pick up skills that will be useful in their future employment.

Lecturer Liesa Hamilton, who organised the event, said:

“It was a very worthwhile session, the students picked up so many tips and then had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with help from Emma. The students gained so much from the workshop – they all did a great job and it really gave them so much more confidence with their skills. I was very proud to have Emma back and it was great to hear about her success since leaving College.”

Student Hope Brown commented:

“Emma delivered a great session and the students seemed to really enjoy it. We were delighted that she was able to stay after the demonstration and answer the questions put to her. The session made me more confident when trying out the evening look for the first time.”

Emma spoke about her day and her own journey, from studying at Borders College to setting up her own business, and said:

“It was a real privilege to come in and give a demonstration to the students. I was impressed by their enthusiasm and make-up skills, and the end results were excellent. As a former student, I really enjoyed my time at Borders College. While studying, I was also part of a make-up masterclass session presented by Danni Burnside, who I then went on to work for. So my message to the students is stick in and, who knows, this could be you standing up here in the near future.”
