National 5 Biology
Start
10 Sep 2024
End
15 May 2025
The National 5 Biology Course allows learners to understand and investigate the living world in an engaging and enjoyable way. The Course encourages development of skills and resourcefulness helping learners to become creative and analytical problem solvers. Studying areas such as health, environment and sustainability produces responsible and informed citizens.
Qualifications
National 5 Biology
Delivery
From 6.00pm to 9.00pm on a Tuesday evening for 33 weeks. From around week 3 there will be an additional drop in hour from 5.00pm to 6.00pm - students can access this as required for additional support.
Location
Entry requirements
It is important for students to consider the depth and breadth of this qualification in terms of academic demands therefore students would be advised to have previously passed National Level 4 Biology, an equivalent qualification or may have equivalent experience. Students may have prior study of chemistry, environmental science or even physics as this gives an insight into the type of study. Biology involves the use of maths including number processes, time and measurement and information handling within the course.
Progression opportunities
Application and Interview Process
On applying for this course, applicants will be sent an Academic Form which they will be required to complete and return. The completed form will be reviewed and entry to this course is at the discretion of the centre. Upon being accepted onto the course, applicants will be invited to complete the online enrolment.
Cost
£500.00
Course Content
National 5 Biology consists of three units and in each of these the student will be able to:
- Apply skills of scientific inquiry and draw on knowledge and understanding of the key areas of this Unit to carry out an experiment/practical investigation.
- Draw on knowledge and understanding of the key areas of this Unit and apply scientific skills.
The course covers major areas of biology ranging from cellular to whole organism and includes the study of ecosystems.
Unit 1: Cell Biology
The focus on cellular level processes leads to an understanding of the importance and roles of the cell. The first unit covers the key areas of cell structure; transport across cell membranes; DNA and the production of proteins; proteins; genetic engineering; and respiration.
Unit 2: Multicellular organisms
Learners are able to compare the processes in multicellular plants and animals, leading to investigations of increasing levels of complexity. This is achieved from the study of producing new cells; control and communication; reproduction; variation and inheritance; transport systems - plants; transport systems - animals; and absorption of materials.
Unit 3: Life on Earth
The key areas of biodiversity and interdependence are covered, along with the processes leading to evolution as well as food security and ethical issues. This unit covers the key areas of ecosystems; distribution of organisms; photosynthesis; energy in ecosystems; food production; and evolution of species.
For a student to achieve the full National 5 Biology award they need to pass the final exam and complete an assignment based on a practical investigation. There will be a prelim exam held in February and the final exam happens in May.
