As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Borders College recently hosted the SHAD event, where over 60 CITB Modern Apprentice construction workers were invited to take part in a number of workshop activities.
Focused around health and safety awareness, the event was organised by Ailsa Halcrow, HSE Visiting Officer for Construction Division.
The introduction to the event saw breakfast served and a talk from NHS employee Robert Atkinson on healthy working lives. Daniel Gallagher of Robertson Construction followed this up with a talk on mental wellbeing within the workplace.
The apprentices took part in sessions, run by HSE employees, aimed at raising awareness of materials such as asbestos and dust particles, as well as noise and vibration – everyday dangers in the construction industry.
Scaffold company Speedy Hire were also present at the event to demonstrate safe practices in erecting of scaffolding.
