Borders College students Laia Reid and Amy Horsebrugh are gearing up for the Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Walk for a Cure event, taking place in June this year.

The Higher Social Care students are raising money for the charity, which is close to their hearts, having both cared for family members suffering from Dementia.

As part of their efforts, the girls recently held a bake sale at the College’s Galashiels campus and, through online fundraising, they have raised over £700 to date.

The students have also signed up to the Royal Voluntary Service, one of Britain’s largest volunteering organisations. It provides vital, responsive services that support public health, social care, and well-being.

Laia, who is a young carer for her Granny, commented:

“We are both heartened by the response we have received from friends, family and the public. This is something that we are both passionate about, having seen first-hand the struggles, stress and grief that come with having a loved one who suffers from dementia.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed raising the funds. The money raised will help the charity to get resources for people with Alzheimer’s and help the individual and their family members get support.”

Laia and Amy will soon be making an appearance on TD9 Radio to spread awareness of the disease and the charity, and it doesn’t stop there, with the girls hoping to fundraise more for the charity and continue to fight for the cause.
