Davie said:

“Being invited to be the guest speaker at the awards ceremony came out of the blue, and of course, I was only too happy to accept. It was wonderful to hear about the achievements of the pupils and present around 100 certificates and awards to them.”

Giving a potted history of his own career from bricklayer to assistant principal, Davie went on to say:

As I stand here today, reflecting on my journey, I realise that my path was anything but straightforward. I faced challenges, changed directions, and took chances on opportunities that I had never considered before. Each step was a learning experience that brought me to where I am today.

“At Galashiels Academy, the belief is that education is not just about achieving high grades; it's about developing the skills and values that will guide you throughout your lives. The school's vision, "Values, Skills, and Qualifications to be the Best We Can Be", reflects their commitment to helping each of you grow into well-rounded individuals. They emphasise effort, respect and ambition as the core values that will drive your success—not just in exams, but in life. Whether you're passionate about art, sciences, or construction, our aim is to help you find your strengths and build the skills that will support your future, whatever path you choose.

“In closing, I encourage you all to embrace the journey ahead with curiosity and courage. Don’t be afraid to take the road less travelled, and always be open to learning something new. You never know where it might lead you and always remember – there is No Wrong Path. There is one quote I want to leave you with this evening, and it is that of actress Helen Hayes, a former Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award winner who said, ‘The expert in anything was once a beginner’.”
